Hi!
It's the weekend of the Science Fiction Treffen (lit. simple "Science Fiction Convention") in the Technik Museum Speyer (Germany). I attended yesterday together with my best friend and it really was a nice day.
Originally, we had planned to do a Bat'leth and (primarily) Mek'leth choreography. We are both very much into SciFi/Fantasy, LARP and martial arts, and did swordfighting choreographies in the past, so I thought a little Klingon show would be great. I would have been in my Klingon persona Hurga, which I also use as my Memory Alpha avatar. I put quite some efford into it, besides training the choreography itself I started learning Klingon :-)
But as it turned out, the manufacturer we ordered the show weapons from (we used sticks and wooden weapons in the training) didn't get them ready in time. So we decided to just order standard Starfleet uniforms at Amazon and make it just a fun and easy event. It was a very last minute kind of action, and you will see on the fotos that my captain's shirt doesn't really fit me, I'm neither small nor slim, but this was made for someone much heavier... I also have no boots fitting the theme.
I did however put together a tricorder from an old radio.
So, here we go with the photo session.
Please note that we took some pics of cosplayers that I would like to share but I can't because I don't know if they would agree. I will play it as loosely as I see possible, as I think it's about the fun and most people who spent time in their costumes would actually like to be seen. So, if the costume is sufficient to hide the identiy, or if there are so many persons in the scene that nobody can be singled out as the expicit subject, or if the person did an event of their own and is of obvious public interest, I take my chances and uploadd the pic. Then, there are some persons I have exchanged Email adresses, and I will ask for their permision and, permission granted, I will load up the pics later. The rest will have to remain on my harddisc, pitily.
Enough ado...
I. Yours Truly:
Pictures including myself as Captain Redcave and his encounters.
Me at the Museum Entrance. You can already notice the shirt is too big.
The Klingon Disruptor is a leftover from our Klingon theme. I had a backstory prepared to explain why Captain Redcave carries a disruptor and utters a Klingon Phrase every once in a while. Well, nobody asked.
My Ticket
My Buddy as Lt. Commander Artist, carrying the Tricorder I made.
The Tricorder
(click on the picture to see the lower half)
Meeting Captain Frank von Saenger-Barth (real world name), who held the lecture about LARP in general and expecially Star Trek LARP.
Cpt. von Saenger-Barth and Lt. Commander Artist.
Duelling a 20th century sorcerer.
(it was a figure, just in case you didn't notice - the image turned out a bit blurry to the right side)
Runninig into a meeting of generals, Redcave feels a bit humbled.
This photo turned out to be one of the worst examples of costume failure, but I just wanted a picture with that car, even though it was not part of the convention, but just a "normal" museum piece. The big black surface above me is actually the underbelly of a real space shuttle!
Mr. Moirè encountering a robot from a far away galaxy. This R2D2 could actually drive around, lift his middle leg, turn his head, blink and beep and extend it's "arms". The guy who build it told me he spent € 8,000 without the remote controll system. It was a really impressive sight!
Another picture of the same R2D2
Cpt. Redcave in his Spaceship (USS Min-Shu, Sentinel class, crew of 15).
Actually, this is the inside of an Uboot in the Museum's collection, but I think it would be a stunning scenery to do a fan film.
More interior shots of the Min-Shu - sorry, of the U-9.
Well, here I'm just the extra in the background.
II. On Board: The main Star Trek Booth
There was a very friendly Klingon lady with whom I had a really nice talk, and another guy as a very nice old Andorian, but I will ask their permission before posting photos, so for now here are just two general impressions:
The bio-bed
The helm - here visitors could use a flight control system touchscreen like in the serials to control a virtual spaceship, the result shown on the big viewscreen.
III. Some more of the impressive Cos Players:
I also did a video of the Transformers:

It's not the same piocture as above, there's one additional person here...
IV. More Sci Fi stuff
V. And even some not so Sci Fi stuff
VI. And finally, some impressions of the location
VII. No Picture
There also was a big parade of the German Garrison (Star Wars), wich we pitily didn't see because it overlapped with the LARP lecture, and a public talk with a lightsaber show group, but this was in a hall wich had limited seats, and we didn't get in.
What else can I tell?
Judging from the official material from the past years, I thought the convention would be very Star Wars - heavy and Star Trek would be underrepresented, but while Star Wars still took the first place (expecially many Mandalorians were present), there were no shortage of Trekkies, as well as many more franchises. I wondered how many people impersonated Umbrella Corporation personell. I even found one family in Perry Rhodan cosplay, which really made me happy, as my father loves it, and it is one of my earliest childhood sci-fi memories.
