I have heard the term before٫ but I'm not familiar with its origin.

I'd only recently learned the term myself, and haven't yet quite gotten it down to memory (I keep forgetting the "monster" part for some reason).

I'm personally not the greatest fan of the term, as I think it unflattering for what is a particularly iconic and well-liked era of Starfleet uniforms...but I admit it's more direct than just referring to them as the 2280s-2290s (technically longer but that's the timeframe most people think of) Starfleet uniforms, so... :-P
