Encounter at Farpoint (episode)

Which episodes/stories deserved more of a follow up in other episodes, what kind of follow up would you have chosen, and why?

Here are some of my choices for follow up episodes/stories:

• TNG encounter at farpoint (exploring what happened to mccoy)

• TNG the naked now (data and yar could've had a relationship)

• TNG conspiracy (the alien parasites could've made other appearances in starfleet)

• TNG unification (learning more about sela, romulan society, and the dissident movement)

• TNG cause and effect (exploring what happened to bateson's crew)

• TNG relics (exploring what happened to scott)

• VOY equinox (the story of the equinox should've been a multi episode story arc)

• VOY unimatrix zero (exploring what happened to the independent borg)

…the birth of the Space Jellyfish that we first encounter at (as, really) Farpoint Station?!?

Pretty dang cool, if you ask me.

The changeling’s pot that Seven finds in the alert window reminds me of “Conscience of the King” (1x12).

Speaking of pot…I believe this is the first time (at least in canon) that Trek has referenced cannabis…though I could be wrong.

16 June was Jean-Luc Picard day. I was so excited about “The Serene Squall” it completely slipped my mind. I did, however, watch “Encounter at Farpoint” on Thursday, restarting my TNG rewatch—I hadn’t seen a TNG in about 2 weeks! Anyway, happy belated day to the great Jean-Luc Picard!

How is a First Officer chosen in Starfleet?

Does the Captain of a vessel choose outright, especially if it is a field promotion?

Does a Captain make a recommendation(s) to Starfleet Command, and Command decides?

Does Starfleet Command decide and execute these postings without input from the Captain under which the XO will serve?

In "Encounter at Farpoint", it seems Will Riker is assigned to NCC-1701-D without any input from her new captain:

"As for my crew, we are short in several key positions, most notably a first officer, but I'm informed that a highly experienced man, one Commander William Riker, will be waiting to join the ship at our Deneb IV destination."--Captain Jean-Luc Picard

In "Emissary", it seems Commander Benjamin Lafayette Sisko has some say in who will be posted, as he requested a Bajoran officer to be his XO.
