Personally, let me just say: As opposed to how well-done he tackled all five seasons of Star Trek: Discovery, the main theme for, and some episodes of, Star Trek: Short Treks, the first two seasons of Star Trek: Picard while serving as the "supervisory" composer and title card arranger for its third and final season (which was instead masterfully composed by Stephen Barton and Frederik Wiedmann in his absence), and the main title theme for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, this film only quotes the original Star Trek fanfare by Alexander Courage twice, late during the final sequences, and the remainder of the material is bupkus at best. Russo's work for Discovery helped embody the franchise's ideals and spirit and a "commonality among people" without repeating prior films' and T.V. series' sounds, while his work for Picard was a very special treat since his relationship with the franchise began with The Next Generation (which Picard is a sequel to), and arranging the title card themes for Short Treks and Strange New Worlds also further helped him make his musical mark for the franchise. In stark contrast, what he did for this unnecessary film is likewise wholly gratuitous. An uninspiring score for an uninspiring film being obvious at this point aside, it's clear that while he wanted to work on more Star Trek projects, Jeff saw that the film offered nothing new and thus produced rehashed, turgid Zimmer-esque action material, and you can clearly hear that with the big French brass foghorn of doom and gloom effect opening the film over the Paramount+ logo as the film opens, clearly resulting in the weakest and worst Star Trek score ever since Leonard Rosenman abrasively paired the original Star Trek fanfare with his main theme from the animated The Lord of the Rings (1978) in his score for Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

Like a lot of fans, I was frustrated by the Klingon redesign in Star Trek: Discovery Season 1. When I watched it in 2024 (long after the original airing), I already knew the fan backlash had been loud, but it still jarred me: the Klingons in “The Vulcan Hello” (DIS-1, 2256) looked reptilian, bald, and completely alien — so different from both TOS smooth-heads and the TMP ridged Klingons we’d seen since 1979. At the time, the fandom hated it, and I think rightfully so. Discovery later softened the design in Season 2, but it still didn’t feel like a good in-universe fit.

So here’s my attempt at fixing it.

Step 1: Enterprise (2154) and the Augment Virus

We know from Enterprise “Affliction”/“Divergence” (ENT-91/92) that the Klingons experimented with human Augment DNA. The result was a virus that wiped out their cranial ridges for ~200 years. This explains why the Klingons in TOS look completely human — smooth heads, goatees, long hair. That’s canon.

Step 2: Discovery (2256–2257) — Uninfected Houses

In my headcanon, the Klingons we see in Discovery are the “pure” bloodlines untouched by the Augment Virus. That’s why they appear fully ridged and more alien-looking in “The Vulcan Hello” and “Battle at the Binary Stars” (DIS-1/2). These houses take over during the Federation–Klingon War (2256–2257), shunning or outright excluding the infected, smooth-headed lines. That’s why we never see a single smooth-head Klingon in Discovery.

By “Point of Light” (DIS-18, 2257), they’ve begun growing their hair back — which makes them look more like an early version of the movie-era Klingons.

Step 3: Strange New Worlds (2260–2261) — TMP Klingons Early

By “The Broken Circle” (SNW-11, 2260), Klingons appear in their TMP-style redesign: ridged foreheads, hair, armor that’s consistent with the look carried forward into TNG and DS9. This is less faithful to TOS continuity, but more faithful to the franchise’s overall look — and I think that’s why most fans (myself included) accepted it. At least SNW dropped the bald reptilian Discovery design.

Step 4: The Second Klingon War (2267) — Smooth-heads Return

Here’s the big pivot. In “Errand of Mercy” (TOS-26, 2267), the Klingons suddenly appear as smooth-heads again, and remain that way throughout TOS and TAS. My theory: after the Federation–Klingon War shown in Discovery, the “infected” houses re-emerged. Maybe they were tired of being sidelined, maybe they were more militant, maybe they outright reignited hostilities with the Federation. Either way, they became the dominant political and military face of the Empire in Kirk’s era, explaining why every Klingon Kirk encounters (Kor, Kang, Koloth, etc.) is smooth-headed.

Step 5: TMP (2273) and Beyond — Reversion to Tradition

By the time of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (2273), the ridged foreheads are back to stay. Either the virus finally bred out of the population, or Klingon science “fixed” the damage, or maybe the ridged houses just absorbed the smooth-headed lines through intermarriage. Whatever the mechanism, by TMP and through TNG/DS9/VOY, every Klingon is ridged. This also fits with DS9’s retcon: Kor, Kang, and Koloth — all smooth-headed in TOS — reappear in Blood Oath (DS9-41) with full ridges again.

What I Hope SNW Does Next

SNW is set in 2261 as of Season 3. That’s just four years before Kirk’s five-year mission begins in 2265. To really fix this visually, I hope SNW introduces at least one smooth-headed Klingon in Seasons 4 or 5 — maybe an “infected” house in exile that the Empire has ignored since the Discovery war. Then, as tensions heat up and the Second Klingon War begins in 2267 (“Errand of Mercy”), those houses could take center stage, explaining why Kirk only encounters smooth-headed Klingons.

That would tie everything together:

• Enterprise: explains how smooth-heads exist.

• Discovery: shows the uninfected ridged houses in power.

• SNW: shows TMP-style ridges early for visual continuity, but sets up the return of smooth-heads.

• TOS/TAS: smooth-heads dominate for ~5–7 years.

• TMP: ridges reassert themselves permanently.

It’s a little convoluted, but it reconciles 60 years of inconsistent Klingon makeup in a way that respects Enterprise, explains Discovery, and honors both TOS and TMP.

TL;DR:

• Enterprise explains smooth-head Klingons via the Augment Virus (2154).

• Discovery shows the uninfected ridged houses in power (2256–57), which is why no smooth-heads appear.

• In “Point of Light” (DIS-18, 2257), Klingons start growing their hair back, looking closer to TMP.

• Strange New Worlds uses the TMP-style ridged look early (2260–61), dropping the Disco design.

• In TOS (2266–69), the smooth-head houses return to prominence and lead the Second Klingon War.

• By TMP (2273), the virus is gone and ridges are back permanently.

• My hope: SNW Seasons 4–5 introduce a smooth-headed Klingon house to explain why Kirk only meets smooth-heads.
