In his album notes for Superman Returns from 2006, composer John Ottman noted that Star Trek was the one thing that his life was tied around back then, and was among us Trekkers, obsessed with every detail. And as such, in 1978, during a Star Trek convention, he eagerly pressed George Takei about how the Enterprise looked in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, largely concerned that the franchise's transition to the big silver screen wouldn't ruin its televised legacy. In fact, when Ottman, a rare breed of composer, film editor, and director - with strong talents in all three fields - first met director Bryan Singer, the friendship that they struck up was largely due to their immediate bond over their shared love of Star Trek, namely Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. As such, when Ottman scored X2: X-Men United in 2003, he liberally translated, particularly in his cues featuring the villainous themes for Magneto, some of the sweeping orchestral strings that James Horner utilized when he scored The Wrath of Khan into his own orchestral mannerisms (also a bit of a nod to some of the inspiration that they took from that film's plot). Given all of these, Bryan Singer should probably be hired to direct some, if not all, of the episodes for a future Star Trek story, and John Ottman likewise hired to also direct some episodes, in addition to both editing them and composing both their scores and main themes. Those, if you ask me, would be a total dream come true for them both. That's my suggestion, anyway. But what do you all think??? #HireJohnOttmanAsComposerForFutureTrekStories! #HireBryanSingerToDirectFutureTrekStories!
