Kirk has done dozens of things to save the federation, his crew, and others. Picard is great also, but not to the level of Kirk.

In the season finale they showed that Pike can change his fate, but it comes at the expense of Spock and millions of people that will die as a result of the Federation-Romulan war that doesn't start if Pike accepts his fate.

The Borg likely wouldn't be defeated at Wolf 359 of it wasn't for Picard, meaning the federation would probably be heavily damaged or maybe even destroyed without him. Overall, the universe would be a very different place because of the things he accomplished over his career.

Personally Voyager is my second favorite show behind TOS, but I will admit that DS9 and TNG are better. I also believe Janeway is a great captain who accomplished a lot and got the best out of her crew, although I don't agree with all her decisions (as @JMills095 said). I believe a lot of the dislike for Janeway may come from people disagreeing with controversial decisions like those in Tuvix, Caretaker, Equinox, 30 days, the Void, Endgame, and some others, but I also believe that Janeway has gotten some difficult circumstances that other captains haven't gotten to be criticized. Overall, the average VOY episode is a very enjoyable watch, whether it's better than TNG and DS9 or not.

True, but I'm pretty sure starfleet has people that design and specialize in Holo programming.

@Kvile2000 going to real Boston would obviously be more practical, but it comes with a lot more risk. As we've seen time after time in Star Trek, changes in time can cause drastic changes in the universe.

Holodecks are also interactive so if you accuratly recreate old Boston, you can still learn a lot

It really depends on the era. I wouldn't really want to serve during the Dominion War and what succeeds it, but I'd love to serve during the ENT and TOS era

@JMills095 Holodecks may not be standard on all ships, but considering that the Enterprise is the flagship and TOS is 10 years after DIS and SNW, it's possible that the Enterprise has the technology during that time.

Also since the Enterprise is a deep space exploration vessel, I'd imagine that Starfleet would equip the Enterprise with such technology for important research missions like the one I mentioned before.
