"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" est une série d'ouvrages anthologiques publiés par Pocket Books à partir de 1998, contenant de courtes histoires sélectionnées écrites par les fans et les écrivains amateurs.
Histoire de la collection[]
Le contexte de la compétition fut développé par l'éditeur John Ordover de Pocket Books, qui cherchait un moyen de faire gagner de l'expérience aux écrivains amateurs et de faire entrer de nouveaux noms dans le giron Star Trek. Ordover travailla avec Paula M. Block, gérant les licences Paramount, pour contourner les problèmes légaux et approcha l'éditeur d'anthologie Dean Wesley Smith pour passer au crible les histoires. ("Voyages of Imagination", p. 471 & 486)
Les histoire soumises n'étaient ouvertes qu'aux résidents des Etats-Unis d'Amérique et du Canada (sauf Québec), ayant plus de 18 ans et n'étaient pas des écrivains professionnels. Les histoires étaient limitées à 7500 mots, devaient être originales et ne pas avoir été publiées autre part. Les personnages devaient être des personnages mineurs ou majeurs établis dans Star Trek. Chaque nouvelle publiée offrait droit à un paiement de 10 cents par mot, les gagnants des prix recevaient une avance supplémentaire.
En janvier 2007, Pocket Books annonça la fin de la compétition avec le 10ème volume. Le 8 octobre 2015, dans le cadre du 50ème anniversaire de Star Trek, la compétition fut exceptionnellement relancée pour les résidents américains seulement, avec une date limite d'envoi au 16 janvier 2016, les gagnats furent annoncés le 31 mars 2016.
