La Enterprise si trova ora in missione scientifica per investigare. È un pensiero eccitante quello di poter davvero assistere alla creazione della materia."

La Enterprise viene inviata in missione scientifica per trovare il punto di creazione, un'area nel nucleo galattico dove la materia è stata creata. Al suo arrivo, la nave stellare è catturata in quello che Spock descrive come un vortice di materia-energia e scaraventata in un universo alternativo. Tutti i sistemi ed i computer della nave vanno in avaria, e l'equipaggio inizia a perdere conoscenza a causa della mancanza di ossigeno.

Una città su Megas-Tu

Improvvisamente, un umanoide dalla pelle rossa con piccole corna sulla testa appare sul ponte. Ripara i sistemi e dà il benvenuto all'equipaggio come se fossero vecchi amici ma consiglia la cautela. Li porta sul suo pianeta, Megas-Tu, ove spiega che Megas-Tu non è governato dalle stesse leggi che vigono nel loro universo e che la magia è la norma. Poi li fa tornare a bordo della Enterprise, apparendo impaurito che qualcuno li possa scoprire.

"Diario del capitano: supplemento. In questo universo incredibile, appare essere parte delle leggi naturali che il credere è una forza potente quanto la materia e l'energia li sono nel nostro."

Di nuovo a bordo, alcuni membri dell'equipaggio iniziano a sperimentare la magia, nonostante la disapprovazione di Spock. Scoprono che in questo universo, il credere è reale come la materia e l'energia. Spock esplora queste nuove capacità disegnando un pentagramma sul pavimento, e mentre vi si trova sopra, utilizza il potere della propria credenza per muovere una pedina degli scacchi Vulcaniani mentre Sulu usa la magia per attirare una donna attraente. Spock parla in difesa degli umani, poiché lui non è terrestre. Anche Kirk spiega come l'umanità sia cresciuta dal 1691, cercando di accettare tutte le forme di vita con mente aperta. Kirk invita Asmodeus a dare un'occhiata al computer della nave, cosa che li convince che l'umanità è cambiata, e li lasciano andare.

However, they were now putting Lucien on trial for bringing evil to their planet, since they expect that the Enterprise will bring more Humans to their world. Lucien's punishment would be to be condemned to Limbo for eternity. Spock and Kirk defend Lucien's actions, but their words do nothing to convince the court. Seeing no other course of action, Kirk used magic himself, against Asmodeus, in defense of Lucien, despite the knowledge that he could not win. He explained that the Megans were in danger of becoming like the Humans they so feared. Despite the knowledge that Lucien was the inspiration, or even the embodiment of Lucifer, Kirk continued to defend him, stating that he would give his life to save Lucien. This impressed the Megans, and they give Lucien his freedom.

The Megans tell Kirk that if any other Humans make it to their planet they would be welcomed, and the Enterprise is returned to its proper universe.
