• mid-February – The second Star Trek pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before" is delivered to NBC. NBC orders sixteen episodes, with the first to air in September. (The Making of Star Trek) Still, Star Trek is nearly canceled by Desilu Studios, being perceived as too costly to produce. Vigorously defended by Herb Solow, he finds studio head Lucille Ball on his side, who, by overruling her Board of Directors, saves Star Trek from cancellation.

• 1 August – The deal between Desilu Studios and model kit company Aluminum Metal Toys (AMT), brokered by Stephen Edward Poe, is successfully finalized. The deal entailed free support by AMT for the production of the Original Series in return for the exclusive rights to market model kits based on the series. The details of the deal were negotiated by Ed Pearlstein of Desilu Studios and Don Beebe of AMT. It was the start of a decades long association of the model kit company with the Star Trek franchise. As such, AMT is the earliest known company to hold an official Star Trek franchise merchandise license.

"The accent," Gould writes, "was less on the super-duper gadgetry usually associated with travel in the heavens than on astronautical soap opera that suffers from interminable flight drag.
