According to an unused okudagram created for TNG: "The Royale", reproduced in Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Continuing Mission, on February 7. NASA loses contact with the Charybdis. NASA also launches the spaceship Jacob to conduct a follow-up mission on locating the Charybdis.
