A sign at a clinic that asks "is someone hurting you?"

Abuse was the maltreatment of an individual or the misuse of a ability, usually power. Personal abuse against an individual could be physically and/or psychologically damaging, and was committed by an abuser.

In 2024, a sign on the inside of the Clinica Las Mariposas asked the question "Is someone hurting you?" offering help to people experiencing abuse. (PIC: "Monsters")

Physical[]

In 2366, Benjamin Sisko stated his lack of tolerance for the abuse of any lifeform, in this case that of Tosk by the Hunters. One of the Hunters disputed his statement, saying their race honored the Tosk. (DS9: "Captive Pursuit")

In 2377, The Doctor was forced to hide in Seven of Nine's Borg implants to evade capture by a Lokirrim patrol. While controlling her body, The Doctor consumed nine glasses of wine, an entire cheesecake, and three servings of Ktarian chocolate puffs. Once returned control, Seven accused The Doctor of abusing her body. (VOY: "Body and Soul")

Later that year, The Doctor stated Iko was crude and abusive when he first arrived on the USS Voyager for treatment and transport. Iko, when first transported to Sickbay, attempted to hold Seven of Nine hostage and later threatened to kill everyone if he was not released. (VOY: "Repentance")

Psychological[]

In 2365, Captain Jean-Luc Picard accused the strategist Sirna Kolrami of having been denigrating and abusive of Commander William Riker since boarding the USS Enterprise-D. Previous to this, Kolrami had made public offhand statements degrading Riker's skill and command style. (VOY: "Peak Performance")

When Jadzia Dax was hosting the Trill initiate Arjin in 2370, she had determined to go easy on Arjin to avoid becoming like her own field docent, Curzon Dax. Benjamin Sisko reminded her that Curzon was tough, and "maybe even abusive in his own charming way." Jadzia later revealed to Arjin that Curzon made her two weeks of field training miserable, and that she cried herself to sleep every night. (DS9: "Playing God")

In 2371, the Klingon Kozak in a drunken rage accidentally fell on his own blade while attempting to kill Quark in Quark's Bar. Quark reported to Odo that Kozak had been abusive and vulgar before embellishing the rest of the altercation. (DS9: "The House of Quark")

In a draft of The Doctor's autobiographical holo-novel, Photons Be Free, he called his colleagues on the USS Voyager abusive in the introduction to chapter five. The scene featured the character Marseilles, with excessive sarcasm and demeaning language, tricking the holo-novel's hologram protagonist into going to Engineering to attend to a medical emergency that did not exist. The character Torrey, after reminding the protagonist that Engineering is off-limits to holograms, belittled the protagonist's auditory subroutines and matrix. When confronted about her harsh behavior, Torrey threatened to reprogram the protagonist. (VOY: "Author, Author")

In 2257, Lieutenant commander Saru said that Captain Lorca had abused their idealism in a speech to gathered officers on the USS Discovery to rally them in the face of Lorca's betrayal. (DIS: "What's Past Is Prologue")

Later that year, Amanda Grayson harbored a fugitive, her son Spock, reasoning she could legally invoke diplomatic immunity. Her husband Sarek claimed to do so was an abuse of his authority as ambassador. (DIS: "Light and Shadows")

In 2268, during a visit to Deep Space K-7, Undersecretary Nilz Baris accused Captain Kirk of having abused his authority, among other things. Kirk had repeatedly brushed off Baris' requests for more security on his quadrotriticale. (TOS: "The Trouble with Tribbles")
