A field of study or discipline was a specified area of knowledge that was researched or taught at an advanced academic level. Those who mastered a particular field where said to be experts in the field.
The Klingon scientist Antaak's field of study was metagenic research. (ENT: "Divergence")
Q considered himself to be "an expert in humanity." When William T. Riker questioned that assertion, Q added that it was "Not a very challenging field of study, I grant you." (TNG: "True Q")
When Doctor Lewis Zimmerman's offer for Leeta to return with him back to Jupiter Station was rejected, he considered that "Perhaps I'm better suited to a life of solitary research and dedication to my chosen field of study." (DS9: "Doctor Bashir, I Presume")
