New York-born actor and television director Alan Bergmann (17 October 192731 August 2017; age 89) played Lal in the Star Trek: The Original Series third season episode "The Empath".

Prior to this, Bergmann appeared on the television series The Nurses, starring fellow TOS guest actor Stephen Brooks. Bergmann also guest-starred in an episode of The Wild Wild West and an episode of The Big Valley, both of which also guest-starred Paul Comi. In 1967, Bergmann appeared with Paul Fix in an episode of The High Chaparral, a Western series which starred Henry Darrow. Later television appearances include guest spots on Bracken's World (co-starring with Booker Bradshaw and Madlyn Rhue), Mission: Impossible (with Leonard Nimoy, Sid Haig, Susan Howard, James B. Sikking, and Paul Sorenson), Search (with Malachi Throne), Mannix (with Leslie Parrish, Celeste Yarnall, and a two-parter with John Colicos), and Wonder Woman (with Harris Yulin).

Bergmann also had a few films to his credit, including 1964's Black Like Me with David Huddleston, the 1972 TV movie Welcome Home, Johnny Bristol with Brock Peters and John Hoyt, and 1997's Turbulence with Catherine Hicks.
