An alcoholic was someone who consumes a lot of alcoholic beverages or was habitually drunk. A drunk, drunkard or sot were also insulting terms for an alcoholic.

According to Jack London, the dishwasher at the Hotel Brian was an alcoholic, stating that he was regularly "drunk all day, but at least he gets here on time." (TNG: "Time's Arrow")

In an alternate 1944, Sal described Joe Prazki as "a welsher and a drunk," warning to Jonathan Archer that "I wouldn't put too much stock into what comes out of his mouth." (ENT: "Storm Front")

In 2268, an android replica of Stella Mudd referred to Harry Mudd as a miserable sot. (TOS: "I, Mudd")

In an alternate timeline, where Harry Kim was not assigned to USS Voyager, he insulted Tom Paris by calling him "a loser and a drunk." (VOY: "Non Sequitur")

According to Odo, Kozak, a Klingon Quark had killed in self-defense in his bar in 2372, was "by all accounts a thoroughly disreputable character, a notorious drunkard." Quark justified the death, of who he had previously described as "a typical drunken Klingon," stating that, "Well, sounds like someone who was going to get himself killed sooner or later. It's a shame it had to happen here." (DS9: "The House of Quark")

Later that year, Quark questioned why Bajorans felt the need to have a time of cleansing, as they were not known for being "a bunch of hedonistic holosuite-obsessed drunkards to begin with." (DS9: "Bar Association")

When the threat of the Dominion invasion of the Alpha Quadrant loomed in 2373, Quark became concerned with how he would make a living, because "the Jem'Hadar don't eat, don't drink, and they don't have sex. And if that wasn't bad enough, the Founders don't eat and don't drink, and they don't have sex either. Which, between you and me, makes my financial future less than promising." Tora Ziyal, however, attempted to reassure Quark, that "it might not be so bad," stating that, "for all we know the Vorta could be gluttonous, alcoholic sex maniacs." (DS9: "By Inferno's Light")
