The Algira sector was a region of space near the Federation-Cardassian border in the Alpha Quadrant. This sector was the last known location of the missing runabout USS Mekong used by Elim Garak and Odo in their search for Enabran Tain in 2371.

The starship USS Portland and a Cardassian cruiser were later assigned to search the Algira sector for Odo and Elim Garak's missing runabout, not knowing that it had actually been picked up by a Romulan warbird near the Unefra system. (DS9: "The Die is Cast")

Background information[]

This sector's quadrant of origin is inferred based on the position of the Cardassian Union as seen in the star chart appearing in the Star Trek: Picard episode "Maps and Legends".

It was possible that the Unefra system was located in the Algira sector, but this fact was never made clear.

"al-GI-ruh" was the pronunciation for this sector's name from the script pronunciation guide. [1]

According to StarTrek.com, this sector was named after the star Algira. [2](X)

According to Star Trek: Star Charts (p. 46) and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Stellar Cartography", pp. 18-19; "Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"; "The Dominion War: Strategy and Battles, 2373-75"), within this sector, there was a star system named Algira, which this sector might possibly be named after. The system's primary was a G-class star. According to a map of the Cardassian Union – prepared by an anonymous astrography clerk, from the Cardassian Central Archives, in 2364 – Algira was identified as a Cardassian system.
