Alien abduction was the action of being taken without consent by aliens from one's homeworld.
In 4000 B.C., an unknown alien race abducted Humans from Earth and trained them as agents to help Earth through some perilous times. Gary Seven was one such agent known to Starfleet when the USS Enterprise traveled back in time to 1968 because Starfleet noticed some abnormalities in the timeline. (TOS: "Assignment: Earth")
To date in Star Trek known history, no one ever discovered who or what that race was. However, it was assumed that one day, once Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets had evolved to a certain social and technological level, they would reveal themselves.
In the 19th century, Humans were abducted from Earth by the Skagarans. Several thousand Humans were taken from America's western rocky desert regions (with their horses, dogs and cattle). They were then forced to work as slaves, helping the Skagarans start a colony on a planet in the Delphic Expanse. In 2153, Enterprise NX-01 discovered the planet and the descendants of the abductees, who had overthrown their Skagaran masters. (ENT: "North Star")
In 1937, the Briori from the Delta Quadrant also abducted over three hundred Humans from Earth, including famous female pilot Amelia Earhart, to be used as slaves. The slaves later revolted and overthrew the Briori, establishing their own community on the planet. In 2371, the USS Voyager discovered some of the abductees and their descendants, all of whom were in suspended animation. (VOY: "The 37's")
In 2151, Sub-Commander T'Pol stated fear of alien abduction caused a great deal of apprehension on Earth for centuries. She speculated that taking an Akaali up to Enterprise might spawn a similar conspiracy on the Akaali homeworld. T'Pol also suggested a remote farm as a landing site for an away team from Enterprise to visit the surface of that planet, in order to minimize cultural contamination if the away team was discovered. (ENT: "Civilization")
T'Pol's statement in "Civilization" seems to suggest that alien abduction conspiracies were present on Earth since before the 20th century. In actuality, alien abduction cases only entered the popular consciousness in the 1960s.
Barash's species bears a resemblance to the Grays in popular alien abduction culture from the mid-20th century onwards.
