The Alpha Majoris system, also known as the Dubhe system, Alpha Ursae Majoris system, or 50 Ursae Majoris, was an inhabited planetary system in the Alpha Quadrant.
This system was home to a warp-capable civilization and the mellitus. Both were found on Alpha Majoris I. (TOS: "Wolf in the Fold"; SNW: "Strange New Worlds")
Components[]
Stellar system[]
This was a quaternary star system. The cental system was a binary star system consisting of the K-type giant Dubhe (the proper name for Alpha Ursae Majoris A) and the A-type dwarf Alpha Ursae Majoris B. In orbit around this system, there were the F-type stars HD 95638 A and HD 95638 B in a binary star system.
Planetary system[]
In this system, there were six planets. (SNW: "Strange New Worlds")
History[]
By 2259, the Federation had established first contact with this system and could visit it freely. (SNW: "Strange New Worlds")
In the early 24th century, this system was a destination on the commercial transport routes. (TNG-R: "Inheritance")
Stellar cartography[]
The Alpha Majoris system was visible from Earth in the constellation Ursa Major. This system could be found in the asterism Big Dipper and, when aligned with Merak, they pointed to Polaris. This system was approximately 123 light years from Sol.
Nearby inhabited star systems included the Talar, Galen, Kiley, Gamma Trianguli, Scalos, and Algol systems.

Dubhe on a star map tracking incoming Klingon warp signatures
In 2256, just before the Battle of the Binary Stars, this system was displayed on a computer display monitoring the warp signatures of incoming Klingon starships aboard the USS Shenzhou. (DIS: "The Vulcan Hello", "Battle at the Binary Stars")
In 2259, the location of this system was labeled on a stellar cartography chart that was seen on the USS Enterprise's ready room viewscreen. The system's symbol had a blue color, indicating that it was affiliated with the Federation. (TOS: "Wolf in the Fold"; SNW: "Strange New Worlds", "Children of the Comet")
In 2293, the location of Alpha Majoris in the Milky Way Galaxy was labeled on the star chart "The Explored Galaxy", which was seen in James T. Kirk's quarters aboard the USS Enterprise-A. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country okudagram)
On stardate 1292.4, the location of Alpha Majoris was labeled in a chart used during a Section 31 Alpha Team briefing. (Star Trek: Section 31)
In 2365, the location of Alpha Majoris was labeled in a Subspace Comm Net Ops star chart, which was seen in the courtroom on Starbase 173. A subspace line connected this system to Capella. (TNG: "The Measure Of A Man")
The system's location was labeled in a Federation star chart that was in Fleet Admiral Kirsten Clancy's office at Starfleet Headquarters in 2399 and on the bridge of the USS Titan-A in 2401. The Alpha Majoris system was in or near to neutral space. (PIC: "Maps and Legends", "The Next Generation", "Disengage")
Background information[]
Information on this system was derived from the episodes, from the reference works Star Trek: Star Charts and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library, and from real world sources. The reference works were used extensively in the creation of star charts seen in Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Star Trek: Lower Decks. The real-world information added to the article was current as of 2025.
It was written in the Star Trek: Star Charts (p. 47) and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"), that the system, in 2378, was an independent system.
In August 2024, an annotated computer paste-up of the star chart from "The Measure Of A Man" was put up for auction in the Entertainment Memorabiliia Live Auction: Los Angeles Summer 2024 by Propstore Auction. [1]
