Alvarado was a male Human who served as a Starfleet operations division officer during the mid-23rd century.

During the Klingon War of 2256-57, he served as a soldier on J'Gal.

After one particular battle, Alvarado suffered a severe chest wound, and was beamed into the FOB's Mobile Combat Surgical Unit where he was immediately attended to by Nurse Christine Chapel. Upon seeing his wounds, she called over Doctor Joseph M'Benga, who determined that Alvarado suffered from "internal bleeding [and] massive damage to every major organ." Chapel suggested that she prep him for surgery, but M'Benga reminded her that they did not have an internal organ regenerator, leaving Chapel to wonder if all they could do was give him a morphine drip and let him die.

As they discussed the matter, more incoming wounded were preparing to transport in, forcing M'Benga to decide to move him from the transporter pad, or more people would die. Chapel knew that once the relief convoy got there, the arriving starships would have a surgery bay, and she urged M'Benga for them to do something. M'Benga suggested that they load his pattern into the transporter buffer and they could keep him suspended there until help arrived. Alvarado was then beamed off the platform and his bio-data was placed in a backlog – labelled ORG-33020-10100E and 91724-E – with the intention of recalling his pattern later for rematerialization.

After Klingon General Dak'Rah stepped up his attacks and caused damage to the Mobile Combat Surgical Unit's power supply, the unit's personnel scrambled to get the transporters back online, to do so, however, meant purging the backlogs. As more soldiers prepared to beam in, Chapel reminded M'Benga that purging the backlogs would cause Alvarado to die, but knowing the alternative, M'Benga deleted the pattern, and thus restored power, in favor of saving the more lives. (SNW: "Under the Cloak of War")

Ensign Alvarado was played by Jose Gutierrez-Solana.

His rank was not specifically identified on screen, but appeared in episode's end credits.
