An ambush, also known as a sneak attack or bushwhacking, was a tactic in which a force took advantage of surprise to catch their enemy unawares.

In 2267, the Gorn executed the perfect ambush on the crew of the USS Enterprise, by first attacking and destroying the outpost on Cestus III, before luring the ship there under the guise of an invitation from the outpost Commodore Travers. (TOS: "Arena")

In 2268, during a Melkotian re-creation of the Battle at the OK Corral, "Ike Clanton" (James T. Kirk) was advised by Johnny Behan to bushwhack the Earps when they arrived at the O.K. Corral. Kirk rejected it, saying he couldn't murder them. (TOS: "Spectre of the Gun")

Later that year, Kang accused Captain James T. Kirk of luring his ship into an ambush near Beta XII-A by a false Klingon distress call; Kirk countered that "Federation ships don't specialize in sneak attacks." (TOS: "Day of the Dove")

In 2285, Khan Noonien Singh, having hijacked the USS Reliant with his crew of Augments, lured the USS Enterprise to Regula I in order to take revenge on the now Admiral Kirk. Pretending to have communications trouble, the two ships got in close, allow the Reliant to raise shields and attack the Enterprise, dealing heavy damage. During the Battle of the Mutara Nebula, the Enterprise got its revenge by using Khan's lack of "3-dimensional thinking" to sneak up from behind by ascension and dealt a mortal blow to the ship and the Augments (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan)

Galor-class warships were often ambushed in the Badlands by the Maquis because they had nowhere to run. (VOY: "Fury")

Kira Nerys once saved Shaxs' life when they were ambushed at Vannakur. (LD: "Hear All, Trust Nothing")

In 2381, Beckett Mariner, while attempting to reach Detrion 9 to detonate a Genesis Device that Nick Locarno had been relying on as a deterrent, was ambushed by Vrek's starship, under the command of Malok, outside an ion storm. Mariner had been about to go around the ion storm, but the ambush resulted in the rest of Nova Fleet catching up with her, forcing her into the ion storm. (LD: "Old Friends, New Planets")
