The Ancient West was a holographic program created by Alexander Rozhenko, with help from Reginald Barclay, in 2369. The program was based on and influenced by Western stories. These stories were set in the Ancient West period of the American West. The program was designed with difficulty levels; level four was more difficult than the default level.
In the program, the participants played the town sheriff, his deputy, and Durango, a mysterious stranger. The setting consisted of Deadwood, a town in South Dakota, with the Gold Strike Saloon, Miss Langford's House of Pleasure, a sheriff's office, and other buildings from that period. The objective of the program was to apprehend Eli Hollander, "the Butcher of Bozeman", a known criminal wanted for murder.
Deanna Troi, Worf, and Alexander were running this program when a experiment which Geordi La Forge and Data were conducting went wrong and influenced the program, giving the main characters Data's physical characteristics and removing the holodeck safeguards, making the 19th century firearms deadly.
