For the alternate reality counterpart, please see Angela Martine (alternate reality).

Lieutenant Angela Martine was a female Human Starfleet officer in the 23rd century. She served in the command division aboard the USS Enterprise under the command of Captain James T. Kirk during the mid-2260s.

Service record[]

In 2266, Angela Martine was assigned to the forward phaser control room as a phaser gun crewmember. She was about to marry Robert Tomlinson, genuflecting in front of the altar in the ship's chapel at the start of the wedding, when the Enterprise received a distress call from one of numerous Earth outposts guarding the Romulan Neutral Zone. The wedding was consequently postponed. Martine was, shortly thereafter, devastated by the death of her fiancé, who inhaled a lethal quantity of phaser coolant while the Enterprise chased and crippled a Romulan Bird-of-Prey, which had been responsible for the attack. (TOS: "Balance of Terror")

In an alternate 2266, created after Christopher Pike prevented the death of several Starfleet cadets and his own exposure to delta radiation, Martine's marriage with Tomlinson was still interrupted by the Romulan incursion. In this timeline, it was Martine, not her fiancé, that was killed during the incident. (SNW: "A Quality of Mercy")

In 2267, Martine was in an initial landing party to the Shore Leave Planet. She and Lieutenant Esteban Rodriguez were assigned a specimen survey. After completing the survey, Captain Kirk informed them that, once they had beamed the survey to Spock on the Enterprise, they could enjoy themselves on the planet. As they explored, they found themselves briefly trapped by a Bengal tiger. They managed to escape from the tiger, but were then strafed by a Japanese Zero. Presuming Angela dead, Rodriguez left her. In fact, she was taken below the planet's surface, where her injuries were healed; she re-appeared while the planet's caretaker was explaining, to the rest of the Enterprise crewmembers, about the planet's function and how it operated. (TOS: "Shore Leave")

In the script of "Shore Leave", more was made of her seeming return from the dead than in the final cut of the episode, with a scene between her and Rodriguez, wherein she intimately but excitedly told him, "Estaban… I've been looking all over for you!" [1]

Appearances[]

Background information[]

Angela Martine was portrayed by Barbara Baldavin. Irene Sale served as Baldavin's stunt double in "Shore Leave". She was later played by Megha Sandhu.

The fact that Martine, unlike her fiance, briefly kneels before the altar was specified in the stage directions from the revised final draft script of "Balance of Terror". That teleplay mentioned that Tomlinson remains standing in accordance with "his beliefs", implying that Martine's genuflection in turn is in accordance with her beliefs – seemingly implying she is religious.

According to The Autobiography of James T. Kirk, Angela Martine is Catholic.

The character was named "Mary Teller" in the script of "Shore Leave", but when Barbara Baldavin was cast for this appearance, the character's first name was changed to "Angela". Since she was referred to as "Angela Martine" in one episode and "Angela Teller" in the other, The Star Trek Compendium credits her as "Angela Martine-Teller" for her latter appearance.

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 2, p. 23) and StarTrek.com, her rank was ensign. [2]
