The anthracite strike of 1902 was a bitter dispute between labor unions and mine managers that occurred in western Pennsylvania on Earth in 1902. The strike was led by Sean Aloysius O'Brien, an ancestor of Miles O'Brien. The strike lasted eleven months, and was only ended after all of the workers' demands were met. Unfortunately, Sean O'Brien was martyred barely a week before the strike ended. (DS9: "Bar Association")

In actuality, the United Mine Workers' strike of 1902 only lasted five months, was led by John Mitchell, and took place in the anthracite Coal Region of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
