The Apergosians were a humanoid species native to the planet Apergos.

In 2381, the crew of the USS Cerritos made second contact with the Apergosians on their homeworld. The away mission was commanded by Commander Jack Ransom who was in charge of seeing that the Apergosians select an available subspace communication number. Meanwhile, Ensign Beckett Mariner had a side mission that involved power-washing some of the buildings in their capital city.

However, when the soot was removed from one of the buildings on that planet, an ancient machine was inadvertently activated, which somehow caused a surge of strange energy to strike Jack Ransom and transform him into a being with god-like powers. (LD: "Strange Energies")

Physiology and culture

Apergosians were bipeds with yellow-orange skin. Their hair ranged in color from bright orange to light or dark brown.

Prior to their industrial revolution, their planet was home to a culture known as the Ancient Ones, who constructed ornate buildings, and a device that utilized strange energy. By the 24th century, the Apergosians had allowed the Ancient Ones' structures to become covered in soot, to the extent that no one realized that the buildings were decorated.

The Apergosians also had a strong appreciation for numbers, and would look for "digits [their] grandchildren could be proud of." (LD: "Strange Energies")

Background information

Mike McMahan loved the design of the Apergosians, noting "we don't see enough orange aliens with rectangular pupils on tv." [1]

He described his instructions to the design team as "I need you guys to design me a new, cool-TNG-looking, warp capable alien culture that also has dirty buildings Mariner can clean, with lots of crowd scenes." [2]

McMahan's tweets establish the Apergosians as warp-capable and based in the Alpha Quadrant, though this wasn't referenced on-screen.
