The atomic scan was a type of advanced medical scan performed in the 32nd century.

An electromagnetic gel covered the biobed upon which the patient rested on for the scan. As for the patient, they wore a white suit made of an unique hyperconductive material which interacted with the gel. The medical staff controlled the scan with a handheld tool, which had the added features of being a hypospray and scanner.

In 3189, during the retrofit of the USS Discovery, improvements were made to the sickbay, including replacing the 23rd century medical scan with the atomic scan. Later, that year, Doctors Hugh Culber and Tracy Pollard performed an atomic scan on Philippa Georgiou. They were looking for the source of the brain dysfunction affecting Georgiou. The scan ended prematurely at 83% completion when Georgiou, upon being shocked into consciousness, abruptly left the sickbay. (DIS: "The Sanctuary")
