Authority was the power or right granted to an individual by a government or an organization to enforce rules, regulations, or laws. Leaders with authority were often the one's in charge.

In the 23rd century, starship captains were authorized to pay an equitable price for lithium crystals. (TOS: "Mudd's Women")

In 2266, Harcourt Fenton Mudd accused Captain James T. Kirk of exceeding his authority when he pursued Mudd's ship into an asteroid shower. Later, Mudd was handed over by Kirk to the legal authorities for prosecution. (TOS: "Mudd's Women")

In 3189, when Commander Michael Burnham disobeyed a direct order from Captain Saru and went on a rogue mission to Hunhau, she undermined the authority of her captain and Fleet Admiral Charles Vance. (DIS: "Scavengers")

In the final revised draft script for "Where No Man Has Gone Before" [1], Kirk's ship, the USS Enterprise, was tasked with "space law regulation".
