Data reconfigures his axial servo during his away mission to the Armagosa Observatory to open a concealed magnetically sealed door in [http://www.memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Star_Trek:_Generations Star Trek Generations]. Empirically the phrase is all but meaningless (typical ST technobabble). Literally "axial" means forming or belonging to an axis (an axis presumably of Data's arm) and "servo" is short for servo-mechanism, a device that increases the amount of force delivered at a machine's output beyond that applied at the input (normally using some form of controlled feedback to supplement the applied energy as in the case of servo-assisted brakes).

Axial servo

Data's axial servo (2371)

An axial servo was part of a Soong-type android.

This servo was positioned near the wrist and could be used to reverse the polarity of a magnetic seal. In 2371 Data used this technique to open a hidden door in the Amargosa observatory. (Star Trek Generations)
