In 2152, while trapped in an elaborate, transporter-induced illusion which was a manifestation of her own insecurities, Ensign Hoshi Sato was distressed to learn from T'Pol that Baird was able to decipher the language of an alien species, after Sato had failed to accomplish the same task. The sub-commander then informed Hoshi that Captain Jonathan Archer had taken her off duty temporarily, leaving Baird in charge of communications.
Sato later complained to Doctor Phlox about Baird's success. She was certain there was something the matter with her because she had failed where Baird had succeeded at deciphering the bimodal syntax. According to Sato, "Crewman Baird doesn't know the first thing about our linguistic database."
Later, still within the illusion, when Archer was to inform her family of her death, Baird reported that they'd located Sato's father, but that her mother was not at home. When Archer asked what time it was in Mr. Sato's location, Baird reported 0900, upon which Archer ordered him to make the call. (ENT: "Vanishing Point")
