After the crew of the USS Glenn was lost during spore drive maneuvres in 2256, a team sent to determine the cause saw spiral etchings on its hull that provided evidence of catastrophic basidiosac rupture. A basidium is a spore-producing reproductive structure found in basidiomycete fungi, a group that includes mushrooms, shelf fungi, rusts, and smuts.
It was not ultimately confirmed that basidiosac rupture was what brought the Glenn down. Basidiosac rupture might only be one symptom of the issue, or the initial evidence might have pointed the wrong way.
