In starship classification, battleships were a type of large and powerful warship. Based on old naval maritime terms, a battleship was the largest, heaviest armed vessel in a fleet. In conventional terms, battleships were the most powerfully armed and most heavily armored warships of their era. It is likely that the definition was still true among starships, although standards may have varied by species and technological level.
In some alternate timelines, Federation Galaxy-class starships were referred to as battleships. (TNG: "Yesterday's Enterprise", "All Good Things...")
Satarran agent Kieran MacDuff, as well as the amnesiac Worf believed that the Galaxy-class USS Enterprise-D was a battleship, based on her tactical specifications of "10 phaser banks, 250 photon torpedoes, and a high capacity shield grid." MacDuff later warned that they should be prepared for Lysian battleships. (TNG: "Conundrum")
Starfleet often referred to Jem'Hadar battle cruisers as battleships. (DS9: "Ties of Blood and Water")
Defiant-class battleship
By 2375, the Defiant-class was officially referred to as a battleship, after initially being formally classified as a escort vessel and unofficially as a warship. (VOY: "Drone"; DS9: "The Search, Part I")

Sometime in the 2280s and 2290s, when the Federation was involved in many small wars (most notably a war with the Interstellar Concordium), a few ultra-powerful warships were constructed, classified as battleships. Their entry in literature of the time reads this way:
- "The largest Federation warship ever designed, the cost of this ship was equal to a full squadron of heavy cruisers. Only a few were ever produced, and those were based on an experimental design. It was decided by Starfleet Command that the cost of the BB was more expensive than it is worth."
They were able to carry several squadrons of fighters, a large marine contingent, and possessed superior firepower to most other Federation starships. (Star Trek: Starfleet Command)
