The Beta Portolan system was an inhabited planetary system in the Alpha Quadrant. This system was in the same section of the galaxy as Levinius V, Theta Cygni XII, Ingraham B, and Deneva.
This system was home to ancient civilizations that were destroyed by a species of flying parasites. Archaeologists had found evidence that this system was the beginning of the invasion of the galaxy by the flying parasites. The inhabitants of this system transported the parasites to Levinius V. The primary of this system was Beta Portolan. (TOS: "Operation -- Annihilate!"; Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)
By 2365, this system had been repopulated, with a subspace line connecting it to an unnamed location. (TNG: "The Measure Of A Man")
This system was only mentioned in dialogue.
This system's quadrant of origin was inferred from the known positions of the Theta Cygni and Deneva systems. The Theta Cygni system was located in the Alpha Quadrant and was the third system to be invaded by the flying parasites.
In the Bayer designation, which was a system of stellar classification, the Greek letter indicated the brightness of a star in a constellation. In this case, Beta Portolan would be the 2nd brightest star in its constellation.
