Bilana III was the inhabited third planet in its star system. This planet was located somewhere in the Alpha or Beta Quadrant.
In 2368, Doctor Ja'Dar conducted the first test of the soliton wave, a new form of propulsion, from the Science Institute of Bilana III. Twenty-three field coils installed on the planet's surface generated the wave towards Lemma II, where a similar installation was to dissipate the wave. This planet was located three light years from Bilana III. (TNG: "New Ground")
The Star Trek Encyclopedia, 4th ed., vol. 1, p. 83 identified Bilana III as a Federation class M planet.
According to Star Trek: Star Charts ("United Federation of Planets I"), in 2378, this planet was listed as a Federation member.
