In 2257, the system's location was labeled on the star chart showing the trajectory of Lieutenant Spock's shuttle. (DIS: "An Obol for Charon")

The name of this system came from the source material used, the Star Trek: Star Charts and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library, to create the star chart seen in Star Trek: Discovery.
Further information on this system could be had from the Star Trek: Star Charts (p. 64) and the Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Stellar Cartography", pp. 31; "Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385").The primary of the Bortas systme was classified as a G-class star. Located in Klingon space, this system's name was associated with a symbol which identified it as the site of a historic battle.
