For the similarly named Breen ship class, please see Breen warship.

The Breen ship was a class of vessel that made up the backbone of the Breen Confederacy during the late-24th century.

History

In late 2375, the Breen became allies of the Dominion, where they committed a large fleet of ships to join the war effort. Worf and Ezri Dax were brought aboard a ship after being captured by the Breen on a planet in the Goralis system. (DS9: "Penumbra", "'Til Death Do Us Part")

The Federation first encountered the ships in combat during the Second Battle of Chin'toka. The Cardassian and Dominion ships held back while the Breen engaged and destroyed the Federation Alliance fleet and forced them from the Chin'toka system and losing the only enemy territory that they held in Cardassian space. (DS9: "The Changing Face of Evil")

Several Breen ships were destroyed by the Cardassian fleet when the Cardassians joined the Allies. Breen ships were also deployed in orbit of Cardassia Prime after the Dominion's retreat. (DS9: "The Changing Face of Evil", "The Dogs of War", "What You Leave Behind")

Technical data

In 2373, it was noted by Tuvok that Breen ships, in general, used organic technology. (VOY: "Scorpion")

The primary weapon of the Breen ship were formidable torpedo weapons fired from at least three forward launchers at the pikes of the ship. One such ship destroyed Legate Damar's ship in orbit of Cardassia Prime. (DS9: "The Dogs of War")

Additionally, this class of ship was equipped with energy dissipaters which disabled enemy engines, weapons, and shields. (DS9: "The Changing Face of Evil") The Klingon Bird-of-Prey IKS Ki'tang was the only enemy not affected, leading to a defense being discovered. (DS9: "When It Rains...")

The Breen ship was capable of displaying exemplary maneuverability, as one was able to outmaneuver the USS Defiant. (DS9: "What You Leave Behind")

They could, however, be easily destroyed by a two volleys of quantum torpedos, or a single sustained phaser barrage. (DS9: "The Changing Face of Evil", "What You Leave Behind")

Interior design

Worf and Dax in a Breen ship's holding cell

The Breen ship was equipped with a holding cell and interrogation chamber.

In 2375, both Worf and Ezri Dax held in a cell aboard Gor's ship, where they were fed algae paste for sustenance. According to Worf, their experience was "intolerable", as he was frustrated that "they have us caged up like animals!" (DS9: "Penumbra", "'Til Death Do Us Part")

The "Breen cell" was identified in "Penumbra"'s script as "A small chamber made of corrugated metal." It also had a "bench that runs along one wall of the cell."

The interrogation chamber was where interrogations were conducted, where they used of "some kind" of cortical implant to probe their prisoners memory. (DS9: "'Til Death Do Us Part")

Background information

The Breen ship was designed by John Eaves and executed as a CGI model by Doug Drexler; for more information see DS9 studio model.

They were identified as little more than "Breen ships" in all related references and scripts, however, it would be reasonable to assume that the main war vessels used by the Breen during the war were indeed the same as the unseen but previously identified Breen warships previously referenced in "Indiscretion".

Apocrypha

In the novelization of What You Leave Behind, Worf mentions that the Breen warships are equipped with "stochastic field emitter (β)s" that improve the resilience of their shielding.

In the unpublished Last Unicorn Games Star Trek Roleplaying Game sourcebook DS9 The Dominion War Sourcebook – The Fires of Armageddon, the Breen warship is referred to as the Gor Taan class.

Breen warships appear in Star Trek Online as a part of the game's "Season Two" update. They are referred to as the Chel Grett class, a name that also appears in the Fires of Armageddon sourcebook. A playable version of this vessel was released as part of the 2012 winter event. For the 2016 one, an upgraded version named Chel Boalg was made.

Models

WizKids released two gaming miniatures of the Breen warship, the Gor Portas and the Rav Laerst, as part of the Star Trek: Tactics line.

Eaglemoss Collections also released a display model of the Breen warship as part of the Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection.
