The Breen interceptor was a type of light warship that served as the backbone of the Breen Confederacy fleet in the late 24th century.

History[]

After the Breen allied with the Dominion in late 2375, they committed a large number of interceptors to the war effort. Worf and Ezri Dax were brought aboard one such ship after being captured by the Breen on a planet in the Goralis system. (DS9: "Penumbra", "'Til Death Do Us Part")

The Federation Alliance first encountered Breen interceptors when the Dominion counter-invaded the Chin'toka system. The Cardassian and Dominion ships held back while the Breen disabled and destroyed all but one of the allied ships thanks to their hitherto unknown energy-dampening weapon, ejecting the Alliance from their only foothold in Cardassian space. (DS9: "The Changing Face of Evil")

An interceptor destroyed Legate Damar's captured Jem'Hadar attack ship over Cardassia Prime. (DS9: "The Dogs of War")

Numerous Breen interceptors participated in the pivotal battle between the Federation Alliance and the Dominion near the Cardassia system. Several of the ships were destroyed when the Cardassian fleet turned against the Dominion, and the remainder withdrew with the Jem'Hadar forces for a last stand at Cardassia Prime. (DS9: "The Changing Face of Evil", "The Dogs of War", "What You Leave Behind")

In 2381, three Breen interceptors attacked the USS Cerritos when it chanced upon the Breen invasion of Brekka. The ships overwhelmed and attempted to capture the Cerritos, but were destroyed by the USS Aledo. (LD: "Trusted Sources")

Technical data[]

The primary weapons of the Breen interceptor were several torpedo launchers and disruptors on the forward pikes on the ship, which could fire with great speed and accuracy. (DS9: "The Dogs of War"; LD: "Trusted Sources")

Additionally, the interceptor was equipped with a bow-mounted energy-dampening weapon capable of completely disabling the power system of an enemy ship with a single hit. Shortly after the weapon was first encountered by the Federation Alliance, it was found that Klingon vessels could easily render themselves immune via a tritium intermix modification. The subsequent capture of an intact weapon by the Cardassian Liberation Front enabled the Federation and the Romulans to develop countermeasures for their ships as well. (DS9: "The Changing Face of Evil", "When It Rains...")

By the 2380s, the Breen had improved the energy-dampening weapon to again be partially effective against the shields and engines of Federation starships. (LD: "Trusted Sources")

The interceptor was extremely agile, capable of out-maneuvering a Defiant-class starship. Though it was protected by deflector shields, it was nevertheless relatively fragile and unable to withstand even short volleys of phaser or torpedo fire. (DS9: "The Changing Face of Evil", "What You Leave Behind"; LD: "Trusted Sources")

For boarding actions, the interceptor could launch a pod equipped with a large energy bore from a ventral bay, with which to breach the enemy vessel's hull. (LD: "Trusted Sources")

Both TNG: "Hero Worship" and VOY: "Scorpion" respectively established that Breen ships used cloaking and organic technology, though neither of these features have been evident thus far in the Breen interceptor's appearances.

The Breen interceptor bridge featured common starship design elements such as a main viewscreen and command chair, with a door at the center-rear. (LD: "Trusted Sources")

These ships were also equipped with a holding cell and interrogation chamber.

In 2375, both Worf and Ezri Dax held in a cell aboard Gor's ship, where they were fed algae paste for sustenance. According to Worf, their experience was "intolerable", as he was frustrated that "they have us caged up like animals!" (DS9: "Penumbra", "'Til Death Do Us Part")

The "Breen cell" was identified in "Penumbra"'s script as "A small chamber made of corrugated metal." It also had a "bench that runs along one wall of the cell."

The interrogation chamber was where interrogations were conducted, where they used of "some kind" of cortical implant to probe their prisoners memory. (DS9: "'Til Death Do Us Part")

Appearances[]

Background information[]

The Breen ship was designed by John Eaves and executed as a CGI model by Doug Drexler; for more information see DS9 studio model.

The vessel was simply identified as "Breen ship" in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine; the term "Breen interceptor" was first used in Star Trek: Lower Decks. It is unknown whether the unseen "Breen warship" referenced in the DS9 episode "Indiscretion" are also of this type.

Apocrypha[]

In the novelization of What You Leave Behind, Worf mentions that the Breen warships are equipped with "stochastic field emitter (β)s" that improve the resilience of their shielding.

In the unpublished Last Unicorn Games Star Trek Roleplaying Game sourcebook DS9 The Dominion War Sourcebook – The Fires of Armageddon, the Breen warship is referred to as the Gor Taan class.

Breen warships appear in Star Trek Online as a part of the game's "Season Two" update. They are referred to as the Chel Grett class, a name that also appears in the Fires of Armageddon sourcebook. A playable version of this vessel was released as part of the 2012 winter event. For the 2016 one, an upgraded version named Chel Boalg was made.

Models[]

WizKids released two gaming miniatures of the Breen warship, the Gor Portas and the Rav Laerst, as part of the Star Trek: Tactics line.

Eaglemoss Collections also released a display model of the Breen warship as part of the Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection.
