A bug was a malfunction causing a complex piece of technology, typically a computer, to behave differently from how it was envisioned to behave. One notable computer bug was the Y2K bug. (VOY: "11:59")

After a disastrous test of the NX-Alpha, a warp five engine test vehicle in 2143, Jonathan Archer defended NX Program by saying that as they were developing a new engine, it was bound to have a few bugs to work out. (ENT: "First Flight")
