(written from a production point of view)

By the Book is a Pocket ENT novel – the first original novel produced based on the series – written by Dean Wesley Smith and Kristine Kathryn Rusch. Published by Pocket Books, it was first released in January 2002.

Summary[]

From the book jacket
The Fazi, whose ultraregulated culture ranges from strict conversation protocols to unvarying building designs, inhabit half of a planet discovered by Enterprise. But after a disastrous first contact with the ruler of the Fazi, Archer must depend on Vulcan science officer T'Pol and communication specialist Hoshi Sato to help mend relations with the people of this planet, and unravel the mystery of the other creatures living on the world.

Background information[]

  • As the novel was being written in advance of the series airing, and with production still in early stages, authors Smith and Rusch had only the scripts for the first three episodes to base their manuscript on. (Voyages of Imagination, p. 307)
  • This was the third occasion on which Smith and Rusch had been asked to write one of the early novels for a Star Trek series – having written The Big Game and The Escape for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager respectively.
  • Ensign Hoshi Sato is mostly referred to as Ensign Hoshi. Crewman Cutler is referred to as an ensign in this book, though in her appearances on the show she is an enlisted crewmember. Novakovich appeared on the show with the first name Ethan, not Alex as written here.
