Caldos was an inhabited planet two hundred light years from Earth. The planet had a southern desert region and a northern coastal area.

Established sometime before 2242, the Federation Caldos colony was one of the first major terraforming projects. By 2370, some of the colony's weather controls and fusion systems were nearly a century old.

This colony, located in the northern hemisphere, was intended to evoke the Scottish Highlands. The Federation installed a weather control system for controlling the planet's weather, seismic stabilizers for stabilizing the planet's geology, so that the colony did not experience earthquakes, and fusion systems for powering the colony. The weather control system last experienced a power fluctuation in 2348, and had been operating perfectly since that year.

In 2370, Beverly Crusher, chief medical officer on board the USS Enterprise-D, attended the funeral of her grandmother Felisa Howard at Caldos, where many of the inhabitants spoke the Scots language. (TNG: "Sub Rosa")

Ten years later, Ensign Brad Boimler briefly described Dr. Crusher's experience on Caldos, which he referred to as "the Scottish planet". (LD: "Veritas")

According to Star Trek: Star Charts ("United Federation of Planets I"; "United Federation of Planets II") and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"), the Caldos (Beta Octantis) system was located in the Beta Quadrant. The system's primary was an A-class star. Caldos was listed as a Federation member in 2378.

In the script, the Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, 2nd ed., pp. 280-281, and the Planets of the UFP sourcebook, this planet was called "Caldos IV". StarTrek.com uses "Caldos II", as does the Companion, despite also using "IV".[1](X)
