The Explored Galaxy

The location of Alpha Carinae and Canopus III on "The Explored Galaxy" wall chart

Canopus Planet was an inhabited planet in the Canopus system. The location of the Canopus system in the Milky Way Galaxy was depicted in the "The Explored Galaxy" star chart. (TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before"; TNG: "Conspiracy", production art)

In 1996, the poet Tarbolde wrote the famous love sonnet "Nightingale Woman" on this planet. (TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before")

Background

On the "The Explored Galaxy" chart, the Canopus system was located between the Tholian Assembly and Romulus. According to dialog in "Call to Arms", the two were Alpha Quadrant powers.

In the script of "Where No Man Has Gone Before", this planet was referred to as "a Canopus planet", not "the Canopus planet". Canopus Planet might be Alpha Carinae II, Alpha Carinae III, Alpha Carinae V, or another planet in the system not identified in the canon.

Canopus Planet was located in or near Federation space, in the Beta Quadrant. (Star Trek: Star Charts: pg. 65)

Lieutenant Nara, seen in TNG: "Eye of the Beholder", was from Canopus Planet. (Star Trek: Starship Creator bios)
