The carbon filter was a filtration component on California-class starships. Carbon filter maintenance, described by Brad Boimler as "scraping carbon off of slightly harder carbon," was generally regarded as one of the worst jobs on the ship along with turbolift lubing and holodeck waste removal. It was performed with a type 2 phaser.
