Card counting was a strategy of play for a gambling card game such as poker or blackjack, which involved keeping track of dealt playing cards to determine the probability of certain cards being dealt later. This allowed a player to gain an advantage, though it was often considered cheating.
In a simulation of the Hotel Royale in 2365, the fictional character Texas asked Lieutenant Commander Data whether he was card counting after Data won a round of blackjack. Data misinterpreted his question as meaning the general concept of counting. (TNG: "The Royale")
In 3190, Cleveland Booker noted to Doctor Ruon Tarka that there were potentially card counters on the Karma Barge. (DIS: "All In")
