USS Voyager cargo bay 2371

Cargo in the USS Voyager's cargo bay

Cargo, truckload, load or freight was the generic term for anything being transported. Different terms were used depending on the form of transportation used. On starships, cargo was often stored in a cargo bay and/or in cargo pods or cargo containers.

In an alternate 1944, Vosk demanded that the Germans send him the truckload of supplies he needs or else he would see to it that Berlin was obliterated by their enemies. (ENT: "Storm Front, Part II")

The Earth Cargo Service freighters transported their cargo in cargo modules attached to the ships. (ENT: "Fortunate Son", "Horizon")

The United Earth transport Arctic One had several sections for cargo, labeled "Cargo service". (ENT: "Regeneration")

The Ornarans T'Jon and Romas put their cargo, the drug felicium, higher than their own lives when transporting it aboard the Enterprise-D instead of theirselves. (TNG: "Symbiosis")

Cargo could refer to more than simply inorganic matter, however. Anything being transported was considered cargo and that could include sentient lifeforms. In 2368, an empathic metamorph named Kamala was cargo to the USS Enterprise-D before being disturbed from her cocoon early and then empathically bonding with Captain Picard. (TNG: "The Perfect Mate")
