Character assassination was a term for criticism of another's character that metaphorically killed his or her reputation.

In 1893, expressing his intention to continue criticizing Alfred Russel Wallace if Guinan would allow him to do so, Samuel Clemens characterized his vocal personal opinion of the scientist as character assassination. (TNG: "Time's Arrow")
