Lieutenant Charlene Masters was a female Human Starfleet officer in the 23rd century. She served in the sciences division aboard the USS Enterprise in 2267 under the command of Captain James T. Kirk, during the historic five-year mission. She had engineering responsibilities aboard the ship.
That same year, Masters was in charge of re-amplifying the starship's dilithium crystals after a near-collapse of the known universe drained them of power and put the ship at risk. Identical beings from opposite universes each desired the crystals for their own purposes.
Anti-Lazarus rendered her unconscious and stole a pair of crystals as part of his plan to prevent his mad opponent, Lazarus, from destroying both of their universes. Later, Lazarus created a fire to force her out of engineering to steal his own dilithium.
Along with her assistant, Masters shared a low opinion of Enterprise coffee. (TOS: "The Alternative Factor")
Background information[]
Charlene Masters was portrayed by Janet MacLachlan.
Although she was referred to as "lieutenant" in dialogue, she wore no rank braid (denoting an ensign).
The episode's first draft script referred to Masters as a "chemoscientist", the object of Larry Riddle's unrequited affection. He made several attempts to woo her, including gifting her a rose. She developed a relationship with Lazarus, which ultimately ended when he left. Kirk later suggested to him that a recuperating Masters might like some company in sickbay.
According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia, 4th ed., vol. 2, p. 25, Lt. Masters was a staff engineer.
Apocrypha[]
The Pocket TOS novel No Time Like the Past referred to her as Montgomery Scott's protégée, who assumed command of Enterprise's engineering department in his absence.
