A check was a condition of capture of an enemy king in the game of chess.
In 2366, while locked inside the brig aboard the Ferengi ship Krayton, William T. Riker played a game of three-dimensional chess with Nibor who, along with the board outside the holding cell, was on the other side of the room. Nibor won by saying "check'". (TNG: "Ménage à Troi")
