Checkers was a two-player strategy board game from Earth. The game was played with twelve, usually round, pieces per player, placed on a checkerboard. The object of the game was for each player to move their pieces diagonally across the board by jumping, or capturing, the opponent's pieces. The first person to capture all of the opponent's pieces won.
A three-dimensional board game played with checkers pieces on chess-like boards was among those available for play aboard the USS Enterprise. (TOS: "The Naked Time")
A real game called Space Checkers was used as the prop for this.
The Augments from the SS Botany Bay played checkers, with a makeshift board and pieces, while they lived as castaways on Ceti Alpha V.
Their board, with several pieces missing, was among the articles discovered by Captain Clark Terrell and Commander Pavel Chekov while investigating the cargo containers discovered in 2285 during their visit to the planet they believed to be Ceti Alpha VI. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan)
Checkers was also played by Humans on a Skagaran colony inside the Delphic Expanse. (ENT: "North Star")
In 2375, while discussing the merits of the synaptic stimulator given to the crew of the USS Equinox by the Ponea with Harry Kim, Marla Gilmore said it beat checkers. (VOY: "Equinox")
Checkers is also known as Droughts, and was referenced by this name in the script of "Fair Haven".
