A chess board was a type of game board used to play the board game chess. This board was where chess pieces were placed during play.
In 2366, while locked inside the brig aboard the Ferengi ship Krayton, William T. Riker played a game of three-dimensional chess with Nibor who, along with the board outside the holding cell, was on the other side of the room. Riker complained that it was hard to play as he couldn't see the whole board. (TNG: "Ménage à Troi")
While stranded for ten years on Ysida, Captain Chakotay created his own chessboard and figurines which were carved to resemble the USS Protostar's lost crew. (PRO: "Last Flight of the Protostar, Part I")
