A chili pepper was the fruit of an Earth plant, a member of the nightshade family. This fruit was used in the preparation and cooking of Human dishes, as well as the condiment pepper sauce.

In 2266, Space Commander José Dominguez, the commanding officer of the starship base on Corinth IV, put in a request for a shipment of peppers. Tasked with the assignment, Captain James T. Kirk of the USS Enterprise handpicked prime Mexican reds. After its mission was completed at planet M-113, the Enterprise delivered these peppers to the base. (TOS: "The Man Trap")

Whereas George Clayton Johnson was the only writer credited with the writing of "The Man Trap", he didn't conceive the idea about the chili peppers in the episode, which was instead added to the installment as part of a rewrite. (The Star Trek Interview Book, p. 137)
