Coffin was a Starfleet officer in the 24th century.

In 2367, he was a crew member assigned to the Engineering Department of the USS Enterprise-D. When it was discovered that a preburner was producing a higher deuterium flow, Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge consulted with Coffin and Ensign Stepan. Coffin suggested that this situation might be related to a pastore pulse overpressure, while Stepan thought it was an issue of thermal conductivity. The chief engineer agreed with Coffin.
