For the space-based communications facilities, please see subspace relay station.

The communications station or communications console was a console on the bridge of some Starfleet and other starships dedicated to managing all external transmissions. In the 22nd and 23rd centuries, the communications officer was a senior staff position. (Star Trek: Enterprise; Star Trek: The Original Series)

In 2266, wishing that someone would talk to her about something else, Nyota Uhura complained that she was "beginning to feel too much a part of that communications console" after Spock made mention of an error she had made in her last subspace log. (TOS: "The Man Trap")

In 2267, James T. Kirk was unable to contact anyone but the surface of Omicron Ceti III, as Uhura had sabotaged the communications station. Later, after the Omicron spores' influence on Spock had ceased, Kirk asked if he could make a subsonic transmitter and hook it up to the communications station so it could be broadcast through the crew's communicators. (TOS: "This Side of Paradise")

Bridge locations[]

The communications station aboard NX-class starships was on the left side of the command chair next to the science station. (ENT: "Broken Bow", "The Catwalk" et al.)

Alternate 2250s[]

Constitution communications station (alternate reality)

The communications station on an alternate Consitution-class starship

In the alternate reality, a communications relay room supported the USS Enterprise's bridge communications station. Nyota Uhura worked in this room before being assigned to the bridge to relieve Hawkins. (Star Trek)

Constitution communications station

The communications station on a Constitution-class starship

On the original Constitution-class, the communications station was on the starboard side of the bridge, next to the turbolift and behind the captain's chair. (TOS: "Charlie X", "What Are Little Girls Made Of?", "The Changeling" et al.)

Constitution II-class[]

After the refit of the Constitution II-class in the 2270s, the communications station had been moved to the port side of the bridge, forward of the portside turbolift. (Star Trek: The Motion Picture; Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan; Star Trek III: The Search for Spock)

Newer Constitution-class ships refit with touch-panel displays had much larger communications stations with new okudagram graphics. The station was in the same port position, but the port turbolift had now moved ahead of the station. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)

Galaxy communications stations extended

The communications section of a refit Galaxy-class bridge

The original bridge design of the Galaxy-class did not include a communications station, as the tactical officer now handled all communications. The operations officer was also able to operate communications. By 2371, some Galaxy-class ships received a refit which installed three communications stations along the port side wall of the bridge, between the door to the captain's ready room and the aft turbolift. (Star Trek Generations)
