Contact was the act of beginning and continuing official communication with another species, in person and remotely. It could be initiated as part of a formal contact mission, or as a result of a chance meeting.

According to Doctor Leonard McCoy, (continued) contact with life and intelligence on such an advanced scale as that of the Arretans, compared to theirs, could have the potential for great danger. Captain James T. Kirk agreed, but added that the reward was worth the risk. Kirk had earlier noted in his 2268 captain's log that "since exploration and contact with alien intelligences is our primary mission, I've decided to risk the potential dangers and resume contact." (TOS: "Return to Tomorrow")

In 2382, after an extensive mission to Piskes IX, Lieutenant junior grade Brad Boimler joked that he'd be happy not returning there until "tenth contact." (LD: "Starbase 80?!")
