A court of law, court of space law, or simply court, was the most integral part of the court system, which had authority to hear and resolve legal cases. Such institutions were presided over by a judge or arbiter, often in a courtroom. The Cardassian court was not known for showing mercy. (DS9: "Tribunal", "Defiant")

Arbitration was sometimes used as an alternative to court proceedings. (TNG: "Devil's Due")

Most governments had different levels of courts, through which cases worked their way. For example, the highest court in the United Federation of Planets was the Federation Supreme Court. (DS9: "Doctor Bashir, I Presume")

In 2366, Chief of Security Odo was appointed an officer of the Cardassian court, so he could testify in criminal cases. (DS9: "Tribunal")

In 2371, Gul Dukat struck a deal with the Cardassian Ministry of Justice, whereby Thomas Riker, after being tried and convicted in a court, would receive a life sentence and be sent to the Lazon II labor camp. It took some doing for him not to receive a death sentence. (DS9: "Defiant")

In 2374, Quark stated that he was willing to share the latinum he inherited from Morn with Larell after his supposed death. He said he did that so she would not tie him up in court contesting the will. (DS9: "Who Mourns for Morn?")
